The ballet was first presented by the Imperial Ballet at the Imperial Bolshoi Kameny Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia in February of 1877. We're in the midst of the last rehearsal for Coppelia , the sentimental comic French ballet that premiered in 1870 in Paris, that will be performed by the students of the National Ballet Academy Trust of India (NBATI) this afternoon.   • Ballet: Of tippy toes, elegance and more…

    This is the story of the famous ballet, Copp?lia originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-L ?on to a ballet libretto by Saint-L ?on and Charles Nuitter, was first premiered on 25 May 1870 at the Th??tre Imp?rial de l?Op?ra in Paris. It was set to enthrall the audience and was indeed an instant hit. The same beauty of sound, dance and magic combined with the original score of L?o Delibes was recreated by the National Ballet Trust Academy of India in the Capital recently. The musical extravaganza showcased little ones in a cherubic look dressed with elaborate and colourful European-inspired tutus made from hand embroidered organic scraps and raw pieces of net.   • Perfectly poised Ballet schools are pirouetting to popularity across the country

    On a sweltering summer afternoon, a group of carefree five-year-old girls are sauntering along the corridor of Delhi’s Jesus and Mary College. Inside the college’s grand hall, an instructor cheerily welcomes the tiny tots decked up in pink leotards, tutus and pointe shoes and chivvies them to line up in a neat formation.

    Their trainer Renata Manescu, who is part of Delhi’s National Ballet Academy and Trust of India (NBATI), has been trained in classical ballet. She moves gracefully into position for the ‘port de bras’ arm sweep so the children can mimic her and perform it in sync. Read more...
